INTRODUCTION
The students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a Skills Training Programme
designed to expose and prepare students of Universities, Polytechnics/Colleges of
Technology/Colleges of Agriculture and Colleges of Education for the Industrial Work
situation they are likely to meet after graduation. The scheme also affords students the
opportunity of familiarizing and exposing themselves to the needed experience in handling
equipment and machinery that are usually not available in their Institutions.

OBJECTIVE OF SIWES
Specifically, the objectives of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) are
to:
a) Provide an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial
skills and experience in their course of study, which are restricted to Engineering and
Technology including Environmental studies and other courses that may be approved.
Courses of NCE (Technical), NCE Agriculture, NCE (Business), NCE (Fine and
Applied Arts) and NCE (Home Economics) in Colleges of Education are also included.

THE INDUSTRIAL TRAINING FUND
The Fund is to:

i) Formulate policies and guidelines on SIWES for distribution to all the SIWES
participating bodies, institutions and companies involved in the scheme.
ii) Regularly organize orientation programmes for students prior to their attachment,
iii) Receive and process Master and Placement Lists from the Institution and
Supervising Agencies, i.e. (NUC, NBTE, NCCE);
iv) Supervise students on Industrial Attachment
v) Disburse Supervisory and Students allowances
vi) Organise biennial SIWES National Conference and Annual SIWES Review
Meeting;

THE SUPERVISING AGENCIES (NUC, NBTE AND NCCE)
These Agencies are to:

i) Ensure the establishment and accreditation of SIWES Units in institutions under
their jurisdiction;
ii) Direct for the appointment of full-time SIWES Co-ordinators;
iii) Ensure adequate funding of the SIWES units in all the institutions.

Orientation Programmes
All students accepted for SIWES must be given an orientation on SIWES by their
institutions during which ITF staff must be in attendance.

5.05 Supervision of Students
Students on attachment are to be supervised by Supervisors from their institutions,
professional staff of the ITF, Institutions Supervisors are to visit students at least two times
during the attachment.

5.06 Zonal Supervision
Is a system (Method) whereby students on attachment in a given zone are not necessarily
supervised by their own lecturers, but by other lecturers from designated Supervising
Institutions in that zone.

5.06 Log-Books
The Log-books issued to students on attachment by Institutions must be checked and signed
by Institution/Industry- based supervisors and the ITF during supervision.

6.0 SIWES CO-ORDINATING UNITS
Until recently, very few institutions saw the need for the establishment of Industrial
Coordination Unit, and even where they have been established, their activities seem to be
narrowed down to only placing students on Industrial Attachment.

CONCLUSION
Finally, the success of the scheme as could be seen is dependent on the Ministries,
Industrial Training Fund, Institutions, Employers of Labour and the general public involved
in the articulation and management of it. It is pertinent to mention that the scheme is aimed
at promoting the much-desired technological know-how for the advancement of the nation.
This laudable scheme amongst others will surely develop the much-needed well - skilled
and articulated labour force required to build an indigenous self-reliant economy envisaged
for Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

This report covers a review of work undertaken and skills learnt during the students industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) at NIIT Kaduna center managed by: KITREC limited no. 5 station road Abakpn , Kaduna. from January 2012 to June 2012. The nature of the work include, database management (ORACLE), hardware maintenance and networking. This report covers the activates and duties carried out by the student; installing and manipulating ORACLE database, networking and sharing a database on a common network, hardware and software maintenance.
I was involved in repairs and general maintenance of computer components within the center and having being certified as an Oracle Associate ( SQL , OCA) during my stay, I was assigned the weekend class to teach SQL using slides, as part of my Industrial Training. Several softwares like ORACLE Universal Installer, Windows Server 2003 and other tools were used during my attachment at NIIT.
This report gives concise information on all the subjects mentioned, and defines the experience gained. It also highlights some problems I encountered during the process of acquiring this experience, and a few recommendations.

AIMS OF SIWES

It’s aimed at exposing student to machines and equipment, professional work methods and ways of safeguarding the work area and workers in industries and other organization. The scheme is a tripartite program involving the students, the Universities and the Industries (Employers of Labour).

OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

The main objectives of the SIWES are as follows;
• Prepare student on anticipated working situation after graduation.
• To ensure the transition from school to the world of work and enable students contact for job placement.
• To provide students an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work situation, thereby bridging the gap between University work and actual work practice.
• To expose student to work method and technique in handling equipment & machines that are not available in their institution.
• Provide avenue for students in Tertiary institution to acquire industrial skills and experience in their field of study.

COMPANY BACKGROUND

KITREC LIMITED was an initiative of few gentlemen and a lady who were interested in bringing and developing IT training centre of world class standard to the Northern part of Nigeria in March 2002.
This group of people decided to extend the availability of IT skills up North to bridge the gap and enable people that cannot afford to abroad or Lagos to study.
These people namely, Capt. Usman Mu’azu, Barbara Ekpirikpo, Saidu Jae, Abdulaziz Haladu, Aliyu Sambo, Remi Fayomi.
As the Almighty will decree, Capt. Usman Mu’azu passed away after a protracted illness before the centre could commence full operations and Mall. Aliyu Sambo joined the Network Group of MTN Communications Nigeria, While Mr. Remi Fayomi was engaged with Chanchangi Airlines Ltd. Madame Barbara Ekpirikpo and Abdulaziz Haladu were left at the Board of Kitrec before Madame Barbara eventually took off to set up her own firm.
Kitrec limited faced a lot of difficulties at the starting level due to the passing away of Capt. Usman Mu’azu and lack of commitment both Financial and Human Capital Sacrifice by the then Board Members.
Alh. Abdulaziz Haladu took over in 2003 with a lot of debt to the name of Kitrec. Abandoned but determined he alone funded the completion and eventual commencement of NIIT operations by Kitrec in Kaduna. Today Kitrec has its share-holders, Alh. Abdulaziz Haladu as the Executive Chairman with 98%, Kassim Halilu Muhammad as Managing Director with 1% and Sani Maina as Executive Director with 1%.
